Ir Prof. Irene Lo Elected Fellow of Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Sciences

Congratulations to Ir. Prof. Irene Lo for being elected Fellow of the Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Sciences (HKAES). The announcement was made during the 30th HKAES AGM held on 12 December 2023.

Prof. Lo is a Chair Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at HKUST, a Fellow of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, and an Academician of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts (EASA), among other important offices and posts. She has also been for a number of years on the list of the World’s “Top 2% Scientists” compiled by Stanford University.

In her distinguished career, Prof. Lo has conducted groundbreaking research towards improving the ways human societies tackle environmental issues such as low carbon emission treatment technology, renewable energy generation from wastewater treatment, designing engineering materials and systems that are recyclable, reusable, and sustainable, as well as having more capability to produce high-valued byproducts. In particular, the iron-based, magnetic nanomaterials and photocatalytic materials that she continues to pioneer for removing heavy metals, organics and emerging contaminants (e.g., antibiotics) from water and subsurface environment have far surpassed conventional methods in performance and environmental friendliness. Moreover, she has published a tremendous amount of studies on the fundamental understanding of the mechanisms behind pollutant removal, as well as revolving around such important topics as lifecycle assessment (LCA), carbon footprint, net zero carbon, and the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). It is therefore only fitting that Prof. Lo should be bestowed with the prestigious HKAES fellowship, which will serve as an additional platform for her to continue to provide expert advice to the government and other organizations, and to further contribute to the advancement of science and technology in Hong Kong and beyond.

Established in 1994, HKAES comprises preeminent, highly accomplished engineers who are recognized leaders in their respective professional fields with distinguished achievements in engineering sciences or applications. HKAES is especially devoted to promoting the development of engineering science and technology and providing top-quality engineering expertise for the benefit of Hong Kong and the rest of the Greater Bay Area. Election to the Academy is by peer nomination for their personal achievements of exceptional merit and distinction.

Our admiration for Prof. Lo.
